The recent snow and school closures got me thinking back to 50s and 60s when snow was part of winter. We had to walk down Lavender Hill in snow, ice ,fog in welly boots to st Michaels school arriving frozen, wet socks and chapped knees. If you were lucky your desk was at the front of the class near the fire,if not it was none too warm at the back. Back home after school we'd toast our freezing feet in front of the fire and end up with those awful, itchy chilblains which we'd then rub with a hard red square of something, might have been called snowflake.? Boys used to make fantastic icy slides down the hills in Lee View and Hedge Hill, like glass. Few bumps and bruises but nobody ever broke an arm or leg. Oh happy days plus size red formal dresses
